About the Project

The ISMOC project aims at the creation of comprehensive multi-scale computational models of Human Cancer Cells. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, and invading nearby parts of the body. The causes of cancer are complex, diverse, and are currently only understood partially. Mathematical modelling of cancer cells helps researchers understand the underlying mechanisms of cancer development and pathophysiology, and provides vital clues in the search for new therapeutic targets. In the ISMOC project, we develop computational models for different aspects of cancer cell biology, based on a wide range of experimental data from the literature. These models can be used, e.g., to predict drug effects of tumour cells and to identify molecular pathways having critical influence in regulating cellular function. We expect that, in the long run, the ISMOC models will play a key role in selecting molecular targets for new drugs.
